Transfer to a minor suit

An important principle of adult learning is that people will change behavior only if they know the reason why they should change. So knowing a “rule” in bridge is not enough. You should also know why that rule exists.

In the hand where you tried to transfer Larica to diamonds on Wednesday you had A J x x x, and I told you after the hand that you need at least 6 cards to transfer to a minor.  Here is the reason why.

When you have a 5 card MAJOR, you can transfer your partner to it because you can get out at the two level.  Partner should be okay in a 5-2 fit at the two level.

But ALL minor suit transfers end up putting you at the THREE level, 3C or 3D. Consequently, you need an extra club or diamond to transfer your partner.

Does that make sense now?

  1. Thank you for another informative web site. Where else could I get that kind of info written in such a perfect way? I have a project that I am just now working on, and I have been on the look out for such information.
