Republican or Democrat

I was a life-long Republican, and God help me, today I serve as a Precinct Chair for the Democratic party.  How did it come to this?

Barry Goldwater appointed me as his Page when I was 14 years old, and I lived on my own for almost three years in Washington DC.  I went to school in the Library of Congress and worked on the US Senate floor in the Capitol building.  The January 6, 2021 vandalism felt like a sacrilege to my home.

It’s not that the Republican party moved away from my conservative values so much as the party moved away from Democracy.  Suppressing voters and gerrymandering districts undermine Democracy.  Our courts rejected 2020 election fraud claims—continued claims to the contrary fuel violence, insurrection, and reject Democracy.

I oppose the Republican party’s move to replace Democracy with autocracy and the Democratic party’s move toward socialism.  But for me, socialism is the lesser of these two evils.
